Is it safe to use tanning lotion while pregnant?

Question by ashlynn paige is here!: Is it safe to use while ?
I’m super pale and used to tan before getting pregnant, but stopped when my dr said not to do anything that would raise my body temperature. Now my baby shower is coming up and I really want to look as cute as possible since I feel like a whale… but I glow! Is if safe to use self tanner while pregnant… i.e., Dove, Jergens, Neutrogena.

You cannot tan or use lotion. Just leave your skin alone.

dove should be fine, but dont get on a tanning machine its only 4 9 months so try and relax, im sure you are already glowing but tanning lotions should be fine as they wont enter the blood stream.

Yes its 100% safe to use self tanning lotions while pregnant=)

Also the dha in self tanning lotions is low….that is why they are “gradual” self tanning lotions..if you have serious worries consult your dr….but in all honesty you are safe while using them if not they would have warning labels on them..

I believe it’s safe, but it’s always BEST to ask your doctor, to be on the safe side.

This all comes from the following website. Personally, I’d wait, but then again, I’m paranoid. :-) Hope this helps!

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the active ingredient in sunless tanning lotions, creams and foams and could cause harm to an unborn fetus if it penetrates the skin. According to the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS), 0.5 percent of DHA is absorbed into the bloodstream when self-tanners are applied to the skin. Once in the bloodstream, the chemical could potentially cross the placenta and enter into the baby’s circulation.

    Bottom Line

Self-tanning lotions are considered the safest option for women wanting a sun-kissed glow while pregnant. Although it has not been confirmed that DHA that is absorbed into the skin crosses the placenta, pregnant women should not use self-tanning lotions until after the first trimester as a precaution . Also, since pregnancy can cause changes in skin sensitivity, a test patch should first be performed in an inconspicuous area.

Actually, I’m 18 weeks pregnant and my doctor said it’s ok to tan, use self tanning lotions, etc, but to just watch for getting toooo much heat. Also, if you are out in the sun use good protection because you can get sun spots more easily when you are pregnant.
