Is Fake Tan A Safe Tan?

Is Tan A Tan?

Ultra violet free tanning or self tanning which is also known as sunless tanning is a process in which chemicals are applied on the skin to produce an outcome similar in look to a conventional suntan. This process is known as fake tan. During the 1960s it was discovered that there is a link between skin cancer and exposure to the sun which resulted in the growth of fake tan.

Dihydroxyaceton (DHA) is the dynamic component in the sunless or self tanning lotions available in the market. DHA is not paint or a stain or a dye which produces the tan. The chemical reaction between DHA and amino acids in the dead layer on the surface of the skin causes the skin to tan. This chemical reaction is similar to the browning process during the manufacturing process of food. Fake tan obtained with the use of sunless or self tanning lotions does not involve any pigmentation of skin and there is no need for exposure to ultra violet rays. The chemical reaction obtained with the use of DHA is not toxic and does not harm the skin. It does not cause any damage to the skin whereas exposure to UV sometimes causes damage to it. The fake tan has a very short term effect and will change gradually over a week’s period.

In some people the chemical Dihydroxyacetone in the sunless tanning lotion might cause skin problems so it is better to apply the lotion to a small patch of skin. If no adverse reaction in the skin is noticed within 24 hours than it can be applied all over the body to get a fake tan.

By using various sunless tanning products in the form of sprays, wipes, mousses, lotions or gels, a fake tan can be obtained at home. To obtain best results, apply the sunless tan lotion on dry and clean skin. Until the product is fully absorbed it is advisable not to take a bath or go swimming. Within one to six hours the product normally gets absorbed by the skin. Since thicker skin on the feet and hand absorbs more DHA it is necessary to either skip these areas or clean these areas immediately after applying the sunless tan lotion.

Since we get what we pay for, it is necessary to use a brand of tan which is considered safe and which has acquired a good reputation among the users. St. Tropez is known to be the favorite among the Hollywood stars and other celebrities. Fak, Clinque, Clarins are some of the other popular and luxury brand of fake tan products.

    @snow21white you shoudl shower before putting it on and 8 hrs after but you dont have to if you want to wait longer. The lotion can be used anywhere but I like it better on those areas it is smoother!

  2. snow21white says:

    Hi Lisa, Yesterday I buy the st.tropez Mousse and I have two question for you.

    My question is:

    1- before applying the night before bed, the morning its a obligation to go in the shower ?

    2-For the lotion, after the shower it is only on the face, hands, knees and feet? Not the full body ?

    Sorry for my writing, English it is not my first language =)

    @kimberlysue2287 I used to use that spray tan but I found anew place with teh versa spa and I love it! :o ) I liked the mystic but it had a stronger self tanner scent than the versa!

  5. kimberlysue2287 says:

    @Lisasz09 I just got a Mystic Tan yesterday and though I don’t LOVE the ingredients in it, the color’s great and it didn’t break my face out! I am so fair and I lovvvved the results. Does your salon do Mystic Tan, too?

  6. 71dhuffman says:

    @Lisasz09 Okay, thanks for the reply Lisa. Please keep up the great videos!! :-)

  7. Lisasz09 says:

    @71dhuffman This year I have been going to a tanning place to get spray tanned! So I dont use this right now!

  8. 71dhuffman says:

    Hi Lisa-Thank you so much for your awesome reviews! I bought the St. Tropez Whipped Bronze Mousse after watching your video. I was wondering if you would mind doing a demonstration of you applying it? Also, where did you get that little sponge type thing that you used to apply it to your hands and feet? Thank you so much!

  9. Lisasz09 says:

    @MsJamie19 The packaging is changed it is now black and white! I get mine from QVC online! :o )

  10. MsJamie19 says:

    Hi Lisa, where do you buy your St Tropez products from? It seems like your St tropez products are different from the ones available on Sephora website (ex: diff packaging, diff names etc)…some of the products you mentioned are not even available on the sephora website as well.

    Now, would you recommend using the St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Self Tan Bronzing Spray from the sephora website for all over the body?

  11. Lisasz09 says:

    @Blingblong20 yes I would say 5-7 days!

  12. Blingblong20 says:

    I heard that St. Tropez lasts a whole week! Is it true?

  13. Lisasz09 says:

    @teasememichelle I shower- I dont take a bath! I shower every day! :o )

  14. teasememichelle says:

    how often do you bathe when you use the self tanner?

  15. Lisasz09 says:

    @blessedbga yes I exfoliate and reapply about once a week! :o )

  16. blessedbga says:

    How often do you exfoliate after you get a good base with St. Tropez. Is it just once a week, just before you apply the refresher coat?

  17. Lisasz09 says:

    @blessedbga i just use a fluffy sponge or my hands to exfoliate! I hope you love it too!

  18. blessedbga says:

    I know that exfoliation is a MUST for self tanning products. I’m using Oil of Olay daily exfoliating with sea salts and microbeads. I use it with a soft pad. I was wondering what you use and if you use a pad of some type to apply it. I’m assuming that you don’t need a special puff pad or anything to apply exfoliating scrub. Anyway, I ordered the St. Tropez Mouse and I want to be sure I’m exfoliated and moisturized well before it gets here.

  19. Lisasz09 says:

    @Flufferpink yes the spray does have a bronzer in it as well (instant tint) I use the spray on my face because it doesnt seem to sink in as much! Good Luck!

  20. Flufferpink says:

    Thanks for your helpful videos Lisa! Your skin is gorgeous.I think you use the Sun Labs Ultra Dark spray on your face? I have the Sun Labs lotion, but not the spray.I dont use this lotion on my face -I dont like using self tanners that have tints/bronzers on my face because it will darken/clog my pores.Does the Sun Labs spray contain an instant tint?The online descriptions are vague.If so,does the tint settle in your pores? THANKS SO MUCH for your time and for answering everyone’s questions!

  21. diatomshells says:

    Yea I cant use any self tanners on my face no matter what I use, so BE came out with a mineral powder that is called faux tan and I will not use anything else it looks so natural on me and doesn’t break me out. I wish self tanners didn’t do that to my face but it does so I just use it on my body.

  22. Lisasz09 says:

    yes you should exfoliate first! :o )

  23. amandajharrod says:

    hi im just askin are4 you supposed 2 wash the first layer off then reapply for a darker tan fanx.x

  24. Lisasz09 says:

    I use the St Tropez or the St moriz on my chest in the summer! I usually use one pump on my chest! Good Luck!

  25. 59Olivia says:

    Hi, i’ve seen all your tanning vids. Tried the xen tan, and found it ok, but i thought it was kinda yellow/ orange in natural light, and i had real trouble with getting the tan to show on my chest as well. So I thought I’d give the st tropez mousse a try, just put it on tonight. Im wondering, how do you get your chest to look so brown, you look such a nice colour in all your vids. How many pumps of the St Tropez do you use on your chest? do you do several applications?
